Book Club Log #20
On my way walking over, I ran into the young couple (Harmonious Voice + I haven't come up with a nickname for him yet) and said a basic hello. They were walking around because it was still early to go in, so I said that I just typically go and sit because I didn't know what else to do. They complimented me on how cozy I always look, which is kind of funny because they're the stylish ones and I've been told my only fashion sense is blue. They're right, though, in that I only ever want to wear cozy things. This is part of the reason why I got top surgery, so I don't have to deal with bras. Being bad at the small talk game, I didn't know what else to say and they said they'd see me later, so I just continued on.
In the prechat before starting the book club, someone noticed the blue sparkly shoelaces that I was wearing (foisted onto me by my sister months ago, who decided that they weren't her vibe for her ice skates. Naturally, I accepted because they're blue). Bookstore Employee eyed me and engaged me in the age-old Tumblr identification ritual, to which I said my line. Bookstore Employee #3 (since I think I gave #2 to to someone at some point) piped in, "But not from this president." I never thought I was going to partake in this decade old meme exchange, but here we are.
Old Guy decided to sit on the opposite side this time, so I got to sit next to Purple Corn, which was nice because I wanted to talk to her about this book (Defectors by Paulo Ramos) the most. But pair shares didn't end up like that, and I ended up talking to Multiple Names Guy. I can never quite get the talking rhythm down with this guy, but it was okay. We didn't have many people this book club, so the group share had long silences, but we actually managed to hit basically every question for once as a consequence (3 of 7 I contributed - though 2 I think were also overlapping with Bookstore Employee? Purple Corn wrote the other 4 though). We had three Latinx people this time, so it was nice to hear some of their thoughts.
Afterwards, I mostly chatted with Multiple Names Guy about 4th cat that is now his. I miss 4th cat and will probably visit this guy's apartment sometime to say hi to cat... our convo's bound to be stilted tho. This guy truly is like the 20% improved version of one of my cousins, but without the actual family ties, so it's weird. I also feel like this pair share he was including me in Chinese people or whatever, which is like side eye from me but I'll live.
